how about a concert, or show?
you could cook him dinner first so you wouldn't have the expense of dining.
I took my hubby to the fox to see Kathy Griffin on his Birthday, but also rented a room across the street from the show, so we could party and not drive. He had an awesome time! It was great because we haven't done any concerts since we were younger. It helped bring back happy times. And I didn't have to share him with his loser friends
I'm taking him to Bruce Springsteen this year for his B-day

Take him to a place at Santana Row. There are nice restaurants and V Bar is a nice place to have a few drinks.

Go out to dinner (place of your choosing) and then drive through Vasona's Holiday Lights or go to Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose and then stop at the Fairmont for a hot toddy, a hot chocolate, or an ice cream sundae.

buy him some good beer, spicy BBQ, and finish it off with a good old fashioned hummer. Great b-day and you saved about $100 bucks.
